Witchdoctors and other Field Recordings from Mozambique

A collage of sounds recorded in the dense Gorongosa National Park; at the door of huts where
inaccessible female initiation rituals are held on the Island of Mozambique; drowned in the slums
where rivers of children play; the young country’s hymn; processions taking place in streets where
races and creeds from three continents have been merged for many centuries; discourses in dialect;
tradesmen singing the price of their dried sardines. This kaleidoscope of sound is driven by the
rhythm performed by witchdoctors & herbalists, in a group of semi-improvised pieces, where the
microphone travels incessantly from their lungs in trance to the vibrating skin of their drums, to the
spectators that occasionally and spontaneously became participants, sharing their dance and energy,
enthusiasm and screams. Sounds recorded and edited by Fernando Ribeiro in 2017.
